Replace Rebuld Starter motor?

1972 50 HP Evinrude Electric shift Mod# 50273 C

Have checked and rechecked grounds and leads. Filed everything to make good metal to metal contact. Battery reads 12.4 v on my multimeter.

Engine cranks like mad with plugs out with good spark.

With Plugs in engine cranks like mad for about 10 seconds on the FIRST TRY ONLY. Second attempt to crank it bogs down.

Let it sit 10 mins or so and it will do same.

Wires are not hot.

Replace or rebuld starter? Can it be tested in shop? That is if I can find an alternator shop

Have you used the jumper cable test that is described in many places in this forum? Sounds like a battery issue, not a starter issue. 12.4 volts is not a fully charged battery. Connect one jumper cable to the NEG terminal of the battery and the other end to the engine block. Connect the other cable to the POS terminal of the battery and then touch the large post on the starter. If the engine spins freely, you do not have a starter problem. If it still spins slowly, you need to try a different battery. If that fails as well, then yes, you have a starter issue. Starters can be rebuilt by any auto electric shop (starter alternator rebuilder) found in most larger cities.

A fully charged battery will show only 12v, you need to have that battery load tested, your local autoparts store sould be able to do it. But I agree could be a battery issue. Good luck.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Rather then a $200.00 starter I took the advise here. Purchased a brand new negative ground cable and auto zone for 10 bucks. Bolted it on rock solid to a heavy bolt on the engine blocks. Filed the battery terminal shiny. Added some gas and VROOM!!!!!!! You have to love old Evinrude motors. I can't beleive the old ignition is still good.
Now its on to cleaning the carbs up changing the lower unit oil and impeller. A bit of fresh paint and off fishing!

I paid 50 bucks.. oh and 10 bucks for a ground cable. But a condition of buying the Evinrude was I had to take an old junk 6 cly Merc tower of power with it that he wanted out of his yard. I sold $ 200.00 worth of parts off of it before the junk metal guys took it off my street
