Replace rectifier with voltage regulator/rectifier?

I have a 92 Merc 40 HP Classic 4 cyl, SN OD112606. Tach not working and my voltage gauge shows readings as high as 16 volts at full throttle. I was told by a mechanic at a local marine dealer that I needed to replace both the rectifier and the voltage regulator. My boat is stored at the lake which about 75 miles away from my home. So instead of looking to see what I had, I told the dealer my motor SN and went ahead and purchased a CDI #194-5279 Rectfier/regulator. When I went to install the part, I noticed my motor has only a rectifier and no voltage regulator (would that explain the 16 volt reading?). I was going to install it anyway but started thinking I might damage the stator or something, so I didn't. The problem is I had already cut some wires and installed different connectors, which means I can't return it.
Anyway, can I install this 6 wire Rectifier/regulator or do I need a rectifier only? Thanks!

The regulator will be a great improvement

Thanks Laddies.

So are you saying there are no other components to install if I add the voltage regulator? My understanding is that Merc made some models with a rectifier only and some with a VR/rectifier. I just don't want to burn anything up!

What do you mean by "great improvement"?

The rectifier with the "regulator" on the side is lawnmower chit. The new 5 or 6 wire regulator is a reasonable power supply by comparison.

hope it helps

John,
Please explain your post. Should I upgrade to the VR/Rectifier and install it?
Thanks

Let me try again. The rectifier alone, or the rectifier with the parallel regulator, is very primitive. The 5 or 6 wire regulator is really a complete regulating power supply, much more efficient and effective.

If you are up to splicing in the regulator, it is a great improvement.

How's that.

That makes sense. Thanks John
