i fried my ignition on accident, so i replaced it. it still wont start, i checked the positive terminal on the coil and it checks good....so i ruled out possible wiring damage. im limited in my mechanical knowledge. i have a distributer cap on order, in case it was damaged as well. is there anything else that i may be missing? any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it is a 1982 OMC 800 then how did you fry the ingition?
Are you sure it is a spark problem?

You say the positive side of the coil checks good. What reading did you get?

A 1982 if stock has points and condenser. The positive side of the coil while cranking should be same voltage as the battery at the time your cranking. This is usually around 10 volts.

Put a dwell meter on the minus side of the coil and make sure it is in specs. The points on top of the lobe should be about .018 inches.

See if you have a spark from the High voltage wire on the coil.

I would suggest you trouble shoot the problem down to the source before changing parts. Changing parts without knowing what the problem is is a sure way to end up with 4 or 5 problems instead of one simple one.

Your OMC manual will have all the troubleshooting steps.

More info please.

Do you have spark at plugs?

Did you do a tune up, change wires, points, condensor?

Cleaned ponts plate, set points?

DO NOT work on that boat again until you own an OEM service manual and understand what, why, where, and when you are doing something.
Hate to think what would have happened if you tried to jump start your mechanical fuel pump or carb...........:eek::eek:
