BY luck my cousin picked up a 83 115 rude that was in "pieces" for 300 bucks, turns out the lower unit was the only thing pulled off d:) The previous owner knew nothing about motors and just got frustrated trying to change the impellar out and decided to sell it. So we get it home and put a new impellar in it and re assebled her, she fired right up but even after a solid minute she is not pissing throught the telltale, we are thinking maybe the thermostats are stuck shut but I don;t know if that would stop it from pumping through the tell tale seeing they start off closed when cold and my 84 pumps fine after a few seconds. So where to next? We are thinking she might have sucked somtihng up. Sugestions?

Is it actually getting hot? Can you hold your hand on the heads?

It could be that the telltale line is plugged. That is very common.

Any water coming out the exhaust relief ports on the back. Should be spitting some water if the T-stats are open. Are you running on the muffs? Is there any water coming out the normal holes around the lower unit? If the pump is working you'll see water out of locations that don't come out when the engine is not on.

You may have to drop the lower unit and make sure that the water intake tube didn't shove the grommet down into the impeller housing. That happened to me twice before I put dish soap on the grommet and it slid right on. I had no water out the telltale when that happened.

You may have missed alighning the pick up tube inside that fits into the top of the water pump housing. I have a 140 evinrude which needed a new water pump and after assembling lower unit back together and firing it up I had no water peeing out. I took it apart again to find out, I forced the Copper water feed line up top and bent it slightly. After an hour of messing with it I finlly got it connected and had water peeing and engine ran to specs.

Yeah, we checked the pickup, eveything is good. This engine was originally tore down to do an impellar, he never made that far, so when we pulled the old impellar, it did not look bad at all. so he had issues, if either in not peeing, or not pumping all together, and it looks like it originally was not the impellar at fault. So not we are thinking about blowing the lower unit out to see if she is clooged with somthing.

Is it getting hot to the touch like djohns asked? Might not be a bad idea to get an infrared temp gun and see what the temperature of the heads are when it's running. If they are getting hot fast then th water flow isn't getting there. Mine would ramp up to 200 degrees F pretty quick. I changed the Tstats and now it runs cool. Spec for my motor is 143 F. The after market Tstats I bought keep it at about 100 degrees F.

If, it's in fact overheating, drop the lower unit and run water or compressed air into the water pump pickup tube. You may need to remove the head covers and T stat covers to check for blockage and repeat with the water and/or air.

Hand on the cylinder heads is a good check for overheating. If you can't hold you fingers there, it's overheating.
