Have '95 Johnson 90hp V4, 14 X 19 alum prop, 13 spline, with which I have been mostly happy with on a heavy 16' cuddy cabin, deep V hull; motor is mounted on a 20" T tail. Runs about 5200-5300rpm with normal fishing load @ WOT. Problem is I bent up the prop on the ramp and would like to replace it with Hustler type of set-up or similar, how do I determine the new size to achive similar performance?

Tiderunner for Life!!!!!!!!

Re: Replacement Prop

Welcome Kirtus!
First of all, you're about 500RPM low of best-case.....700 low if it's a 60 degree V4.
A good quality prop in a 17 pitch may be best, unless you can raise the engine mounting heigth, then I think I'd go with a 19 and raise the engine to get your RPM back up where it should be.

Re: Replacement Prop

Thanks for the reply Kenny.
I do indeed have a 60 degree 90hp Johnson. I understand that the rpm might be as much as 700 to low? You mentioned that going to a 17 pitch prop, but do I stay with the 14" diameter or what?
Thanks
Kirtus

Yes, keep the same diameter.

Re: Replacement Prop

Thanks Dave F.
I will try 14 X 17. In regards to my first response, I decided that it is easier to lower the boat than raise the engine!!
Any thought to the componet style props?
I appreciate your info.
Kirtus

Re: Replacement Prop

Kirtus,

It's actually pretty easy to raise the motor. With the help of a friend it can be done in 15 minutes. That is the best way to tweak more performace out of a motor. It's also the cheapest. Raising the motor also increases efficiency which is always a good thing. I would keep the same type prop or upgrade to SS.

Re: Replacement Prop

The thought of dealing with the approx 350lbs of the motor and no way to lift or support it leads me to thinking that maybe I should change or fix my prop. That has to be cheaper than all the medical bills I could generate, although not quite as exciting.
Still no thought on the new componet props?

Thanks,
kirtus

Re: Replacement Prop

Do a search about raising the motor. There are a lot of easy methods talked about. Might want to search the OMC forum as this one is fairly new. I have a propulse prop myself and it is ok. It's a 4 baldes so I can't really compare it to my other 2 props. Its a good back up though. For performaance, I wouldn't recomend it.

Re: Replacement Prop

Love my Hustler. Works very well. And I have replaced the housing twice due to rocks. Thats my fault.

Re: Replacement Prop

By reducing pitch to gain rpm you'll decrease efficiency. This is only a last resort when all else has failed.

Raising the engine is simple..pull top bolts, loosen, do not remove bottom bolts..of course you want the skeg on a piece of wood or on a floor jack...either lift the trailer tounge or jack the engine until a top bolt will go through the second hole, then put the other top bolt in.
Tighten the top 2 then remove bottom 2 and re-seal.

Re: Replacement Prop

Easy way -- remove motor -- install manual jackplate -- reinstall motor -- move motor by adjusting bolts.

Best -- remove motor -- install hydraulic jackplate -- move motor by pushing a button.

Sometimes I just cant help it.........
