Replacing 5 wire CDI regulator rectifier with 4 wire

I have a 1995 Force 120 and the battery seems to be charging but VERY slowly (reading about 12.6 volts and creeping up with the motor running.) Also, the tachometer is not reading properly. From what I have read, this seems to be a reg/rec issue. I purchased the universal reg/rec that I have read about (01-154-16) but the problem is my CDI Electronics reg/rec has 5 wires, two of which are red, and the universal has only 4 wires, one of which is red. Is the new reg/rec compatible with the existing one? If so, what do I do with the second red wire that goes into the existing reg/rec? Do I just splice both red wires into the one red wire on the universal?
