Re: replacing carpet with vinyl
I don't have aluminum decks, but changing my 01 Crestliner over to vinyl. I started stripping the old carpet adhesive off the sides of the boat tonight, taking a break as I type. The adhesive is some sort of non-harding glue that a real *@&$ to get off, lots of lacquer thinner and paper towels as there's no sanding or scraping this stuff off, brushing was useless. I have 1 side stripped and it took about 2 hours. All of the decks are being replaced so I don't have to worry about removing the adhesive from the decks.
I'd think aluminum decks would be much easier than the sides as you could soak the carpet with lacquer thinner (acetone, xzlene, whatever) and let it soak to soften the adhesive,,, if it's the same adhesive Crestliner uses.
I'm replacing all the carpet with light tan Nautolex marine flooring, which means getting a smooth surface before sticking it down as any old uneven adhesive or carpet backing will be noticeable if it's not removed.
