I have decided that I was up for a project and I would like to replace the floor on my boat. The boat is a 1986 Bayliner Capri that I recently purchased, and I have a few questions before I take on this task. I am up for a challenge, but I am not sure how big of a challenge it is to replace the whole floor and stringers. I have done some research into this and have found that some people do it in a few weekends, and others spend a whole season doing it. I have never done this before, and this is my first boat, however, I do have some skill with this type of project. Also, what tools do I need, I have a large collections of tools and machines, and a friend who has any tool I could imagine. What materials do I need to buy, and how much are they likely to cost? Also what are the steps and what order should I do what in? If anyone has every replaced a floor, or knows anything more than I do please give me your advice. Thanks a lot!

Re: Replacing Floor/Stringers

Somewhere today on OMC, Merc, or engine non-repair, a guy had a blue Manatee with a white deck and 140 hp Rude that he restored.....with a thread to a site with detailed pics of his progress.

You might look him up and chit chat. I'd say he can answer your questions.

You should be able to find a ton of people that have done that project on that exact boat. First off, there are many Bayliner Capris and second, it is a common problem with that boat.

Go to OB Non Repair. Thread name is Breaking In. Guys name is HookMaster. Thread was touched yesterday. Thread has a lot of hits and the pics and site info you want is well down the list in the thread. Has 3 pics of the boat (blue with white deck) and a site to show the whole renewal.

Vandy couldn't find the thread that I mentioned to help him.

Bump is nothing more than hitting the thread to move it to the top where it's easier to see.......when you want someone to find it. Course if it's a busy day it could be 10-15 posts down before the day's out.

Re: Replacing Floor/Stringers

i started ripping up my floor and carpet today and i do indeed need to replace the flooring. i could ring water out of the foam and wood haha. I was unable to remove the seats because i couldn't figure out where they are attached to. The seats are the back to back bayliner seats. i dont want to destroy them because they are still in alright shape and i plan on putting them back. Any ideas?

Open the B-2-B seat part way and you should fine screws/bolts on wood accross the width of the bottom, if they're like mine were (not a Bayliner but same type seats). Best to buy yourself a "close quarters" type stubby drill now - I waited until half way thru and wished I had it fron the start! lots of small spots to screw, unscrew, drill, etc. Only $30 or so at Harbour Freight.

Have a plan before you rip out too much. How will you attach the new floor to the edges (hull)? This impacts how much floor you rip out and if you need to leave a 1" edge on the perimeter. The degree of rot by the edges may determine this for you.

The foam is a royal pain - try to break it out in big (1' long, full depth) pieces. I used a pick-ax for some, but only chipped away to make sure I didn't ruin the hull, of course. I don't recommend a pick-aa, but hey, I was desperate.

If it's not too late, keep your old carpet. It can be a good useful in measuring rough cuts, if you can piece it together like a puzzle after tearing it out.

Cover up (gloves, long pants/shirt when doing anything with the old fiberglass floor. You CAN NOT get the tiny fibers out of your skin! My son wasjust helping me by standing on a piece as i cut it and the dust went under his pantleg - he itched for weeks.

Save all your hardware in marked bags or whatever. It gets confusing at the end if you haven't marked it as you went along.

And yes, I learned these things the hard way! I'm sure I'll think of more as it was a major learning experience for me. Without the advice on this board, I would not have got it done. In retrospect, if I could do another one I'd be able to do it in 1/3 the time, knowing more about it. However, I also know I'm probably never doing it again.

Have fun, you'll be MUCH prouder of your boat when you are done than had you bought a better boat to start with. I'll be hard pressed to ever part with the 22 yr. old 19' bowrider me and my boys re-floored! It's like a friend now!

Good luck.

Thanks for all that advice. How did you attach the floor to the hull? This is one of the questions i have been wondering. I am sure that i'll learn many things the hard way on this project but all the advice from everyone here helps a ton!

Re: Replacing Floor/Stringers

I am part way through deconstruction of my floor and i have run into a problem. I removed the seats and carpet and started tearing up the floor. i have the whole gas tank visible and around the ski locker cut out. My question is do i need to remove the consoles and the blocks that the seats were attached to to replace the floor? also in the stern there is a protected area with access to the gas tank and battery and such. do i need to remove all of that area too? Basically do i need to gut the whole thing or can i work around those objects?
