Your fist pic shows a key switch with 4 wires (4 stroke)

The next 2 pics show a place for 6 wires (2 stroke)

What motor is on the boat now?

Yes most I/O uses 3 prongs. There is one which uses 4 and that is for accessories if desired

Search for "marine ignition switch 3 position" and they will come up

Dunno what was hooked up when you jumped it, but if purple isn't getting power, ignition shouldn't be powered and should shut off. Did you check your old switch or just replaced it? And yes, that new switch is wrong.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm enjoying working on boat and learning as I go. I will order right switch. So basically the purple wire needs to be shorted to ground. I have another question. Where does the voltage come from to put 12 volts on that line? I don't see it coming directly from battery just to the alternator. So the alternator puts out the 12 v?

So basically the purple wire needs to be shorted to ground

NO :nono:
That wire supplies 12V to the motor when the key is turned ON. Short that to ground and you blow fuses or other things. The key switch you bought is for a 2 cycle outboard. The OB disconnects a ground from the magneto to start and run, then grounds the magneto to stop the motor.

Your I/O works like this

The red/purple wire has 12V from the motor to the key
The Purple wire supplys 12V to power gauges and motor
The Yellow/Red wire supplies 12V to the slave relay to start the motor

Your switch needs 4 pins for accessories

I appreciate your explanation alldodge. So when key is turned from run to off does it open a 12 v circuit if so which one? Color wire? Or does it provide a ground somewhere. Bare with me here. Im learning. I have the schematic for circuit if you want to reference that.

Yes it opens the connection. It disconnects power from the purple wire (turns if OFF)

12V is constant on the red/purple

The key turns power ON to the purple wire to energize the gauges and the motor

The key turns power ON to the Yellow/Red to energize the starter

Im hoping you guys can help here. This is a wiring job someone else did. So I got home . This 3.0 has the e.s.t. ignition in it. I did what you said and here's what I got. I ohmed switch turns out good. So I go back to my coil... Running into distributor and took a d.c. voltage on that big post and got 12 v dc. So there's a hot connected in there feeding it? I unplugged to coil and on the purplish color wire I have 12 v there so I have to chase that wire?
