ok, Did you get another switch and if so how is it wired?

Also, did it ever work correctly prior to trying to replace switch?

Isn't the whole premise of the circuit is to open that by turning switch from on to off..

I got this from others with same problem.

Ignition problem:

With the key off measure the positive side of the coil and a good ground, if you see 12v there then your problem is that somehow the coil is remaining energized, ignition switch was a good place to start but now possibly you have a short near the switch or anywhere in the wiring harness.

Yes, but only if you have the correct switch

If you want a cheap one that will work use this
https://www.iboats.com/shop/heavy-duty-starter-ignition-switch-legacy-imf-39654.html'

If you want a better quality use this
https://www.iboats.com/shop/seadog-3-position-ignition-switch-magneto-style-line.html

Or this one

So it's okay having 12 volts at the coil at all times even in off position

No, there should be no power to the coil when key is OFF

The Red/Purple wire should be the only wire which as 12V full time even when the key is OFF

See my earlier post, you didn't answer the questions I asked.Your
switch isn't the problem if the motor didn't cut off with the purple wire disconnected

I will re read your questions. I ordered the correct switch waiting to get it. I did ohm the old one out and it seemed to be okay. Thx for explanation of which wire has what. The previous owner looks like he did some creative wiring under dash. So what would you suggest I do next?

The nola mike for the help. I agree if purple wire is not energized the boat shouldn't run. But I do have 12 volts on my purple line all the time.let me look at what I got again and I'll let you know when I replace switch

I'm looking at the schematic trying to understand the circuit. It makes it more difficult because I think the guy rewired a few things just to get it to run. So I don't know if it's something he did or it is still wired in its original configuration ..if there was something wrong with alternator diodes could they be allowing the red purple wire be energizing purple wire all the time?

The ALT shouldn't be powering the motor, but to verify, disconnect the 2 small wires going to it. No need to remove the larger orange one

As before, most boats only use a 3 prong switch. Yours having 4 may mean this is where the extra connection was done. Make sure the Red/Purple wire is all by itself and has no other wire connected to it
