sorry even i could not make any sense out of my last message------i am re-fitting the bottom end[including gear box]as it is now i have the bottom end disconnected[drive shaft sticking up what position should this be in to ensure gear operation?
dude ya have me seriously lost.<br /> to install the lower unit to the midsection you have to insert the drive shaft into the mid section. make sure the shift control on the engine and the shift shaft (small stubby splined one)on the engine are both in netrual. while bringing the unit up insure that the shift shaft and drive shaft and water pump tube line up. you sometimes have to move the upper shift shaft with your fingers to line it up and twist the gearcase a bit or rotate the flywheel to line up the crank and drive shaft splines. make sure the plug wires are dissconnected to insure it does not start. its really a simple job. a service manual is highly reccomended so we talk the same language as the manual. local dialects are difficult to read. the "bottom end" "leg" and "gearbox" box are all coloquisms for the lower unit. someplaces call it a foot. but its always easier when going from the service manual.
beats me. some of the early marineres and yams were similar. but ya gotta remember in 1980 they did not import yams to the states so we did not see many of them.
