Torquey engine (270hp) + heavy boat + too much pitch on prop + 'right hand enthusiasm' = ^^^^. Add in a helping of 'not step up with correct height and backlash tools' and yeah....

The splines on the top of the lower drive shaft look like they may have been chewed up because of the broken upper drive shaft (allows the gear and the splines to 'wander' under load)... Hence the mauled appearance....

I was being nice, and assuming he'd wiped the grease off before the photo... :)

If you have a 'heavy hand' with that engine, consider going to a Bravo set up....

That's what I'm going to do. I bought a Bravo One drive today from someone in Maryland. I found a guy up in Pennsylvania cutting a boat apart and he's going to provide everything else from the flywheel back. The only thing I'm not getting from him is a y-pipe and seawater pump.

Will the y-pipe from my alpha work with the bravo transom plate?

Here's what I got.. it says 50R on the side, I hope that means 1.50 ratio?

The other consideration is that not only do I have a 'heavy hand' but I'm in the midst of building a 383 stroker for this boat. When I install that engine, it will be the perfect time to upgrade to a Bravo..

Y-pipe is the same.... Got a serial number from the drive? Or check the uni-joint yoke, look for a letter, either 'C', 'F' or 'H'..... F=1.50:1
