I am replacing the alternator on my Mercruiser Chevy V8 5.7L. The old one has a label which says "transpo #45-193A" or it MIGHT be 15-193A. Can any one tell me what these numbers mean or how I can find the RIGHT alternator for my application?

You could just have yours rebuilt...or rebuild it yourself...kit is only like $12-$15. just make sure to put the screens back in.

Best way to verify your application is by using your engine serial number ( don't know what the numbers mean but there are many on this site that may know ). As the other fellow mentioned, it's not alot of money to rebuild yours...and if you don't want to do it yourself, you might look around your area for a starter/alternator shop. If you decide to purchase another, rebuilt or new, just ensure it's an approved marine replacement.

Searching the 45-193A number seems to indicate that your alternator has been previously rebuilt. Transpo appears to be a parts manufacturer for electric aftermarket components.
Transpo manufactures quality replacement products for the Professional Electrical Rebuilder for most make and models of vehicles, including components for automotive, truck, marine, industrial, heavy duty, small engine, bus, RV and specialty markets.

ranspo #45-193A seems to fit this, http://store.alternatorparts.com/partnoibr304hd.aspx

If you're looking for a new OEM fit or OEM part number to start off with, using your engine serial number is usually the best method or knowing the engine year may help too.
