I am going to replace my old Mercruiser trim pump. Is there a flushing procedure I should use for the lines and cylinders and also what is the best fluid to put back in when installed?

Thanks,
MELMAN

Depends on the year and model pump you have.

The original pump is a 1984. The new pump was purchased off of e-bay and is brand new. I am at work now and am not sure of the model. Both have 2 hydraulic lines and 2 cylinoids (spelling). I know this is very little info but from work that is all I have now. I do know that the electrical plug off of the old pump plugs right into the new one.

MELMAN

melmen

the new pump should have a recomened oil on the pump tag i have a 1995 modle which calls for 30 wt motor oil

as for flushing it really depends on the condition of your old oil if its dirty it will damage the new pump

i removed all my lines because they had water in them and cleaned them in a saftey clean tank and removed the rams and moved them manualy(really hard to move)to purge out the old dirty oil.

after reconnecting everything you can tilt up and down a few times and then crack the fittings on the rams and bleed out any other air and then fully cycle the rams a few more times to be sure there no air left

a SERVICE MANUAL will give much more detail on doing this right

if you system is really old there have been some major changes in pump types and pressures over the years and may cause a problem

tommays

Check section 5 of the Mercruiser manual, it will explain every thing you need to know. Link below to the manual.
Alpha Service Manual

Re: Replacing Mercruiser Trim Pump?

Thanks for the help guys. I do have a service manual but it is a 1984 and looks like it. This link and the other info. will really help. If I have instructions/book I can do it. I don't believe in doing something half a##. Your right Don, do it right the first time.

Thanks again,
MELMAN
