I am trying to replace the shift cable on aq231b 270 outdrive. Just outside the drive the cable is missing the outer cover and the inside cable is just bending and twisting when I move shifter to reverse. I have disconected it at the control end and now I am going to disconect at the outdrive and my question is where the cable goes into drive there is a metal plate with 2 bolts on it I believe this is called the locking plate do I just loosen the 2 bolts and pull the plate out with cable????
Thank You

Remove the two bolts, and plate, then pull the cable out.

Re: replacing shift cable

Okay so I got the old shift cable out but it does not say the size or anything on it so I measured the length and it measures 19'-9" does this mean I need a 20' cable and also do I need a certain cable or will any cable work as long as its the same length????
Thank You

Re: replacing shift cable

The 20 should work fine. I don't know about the xtreme cables. They are larger in diameter, not sure if that will be a problem in your older setup or not. The regular cables should be good for 15 to 20 years.

There used to be the standard cables and the xstreme cables. I don't see the standard cables anymore. Who knows.
