Hey all,

well I got my nasty 77' 70HP rude apart finally to do the water pump, and all I can say is UGH what a flippin mess...

there was all kinds of bits of metal, 3 wasps nests, and all sorts of nastyness in the housing...

Upon examination after i cleaned it up a bit, I noticed that the upper plate to where the shift rod goes into the lower unit is almost deteriorated to the point of failure... (see pics), the little boot over it wasnt even attached anymore because there's so much metal missing. :(

My question is, from the exploded parts view, it looks just like a plate, an o-ring, and a gasket.

Are there any tricks to replacing this? (already ordered the parts). I just dont want to have something spring out that I can't put back in when I remove the plate (if i can get it off hehe, its pretty bad).

Looks like I can just take the plate off, replace the o-ring/gasket and put the new plate on...

Just want to be sure.

Thanks
Num

Re: Replacing shift rod housing

clean the rust off shift rod with emery cloth, and oil really well. you are on the right track.
