Can someone please let me knoe how to take the shifting cable off of a 120hp Mercruiser Bravo (1978)? I have the lower unit off to fix something else and I also need to replace he shifting cable, the one from the motor to the lower unit. I see the upper part which looks easy to take off but I followed the other end as far as I could and came to a spiraled piece of metal around the cable. That's as far as I got.

the spiral wrap is a heat shield. the cable goes thru the transom, thru the boot, to the slide. look at this website. it has pictures and descriptions. http://www.mercstuff.com/shiftcable2.htm <br />don't know how old your bellows are, look them over real good and consider doing them also.

How on earth do I get to that newer style shift cable retainer nut? I have the lower unit off. Do I press the upper part of the trim up and turn it all the way to the left? This seems to be very difficult to get to.
