Hi all,

Yup you guessed it I snapped the motor off the back of the boat.....the worst part was I was sober, anyway...

I could really use some direction as to how the best way of removing or getting to the swivel bracket? Is it to remove the lower end, etc, etc, or do I have to remove the power head from the top,? I was able to get an entire bracket so I should not have to seat any of the seals and such that need to be pressed in/or at least I hope, and I do have the service manual for the motor, that is a 77 9.9 johnson seahorse, any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks Chris

Re: replacing swivel bracket

Drop your lower unit, then pull the powerhead. The nuts/boltst that hold the tiller bracket on are hard to get to but are doable with the right tool.
It's not that bad. You're not the first on the breaking, either. I've snapped one off of a '63 fastwin and broke the tiller bracket off a '99 30hp johnson.
Good luck,
JBJ

BTW, you don't have to drop the lower unit but it's handy to have it off in my opinion so you don't have the weight on there.

Re: replacing swivel bracket

Thanks Jb,

I thought that is might be possible to do with out removing the lower unit as well, but also thought it might be best if I just got it out of the way,

So I do have to remove the power head from the casing/shell, O.K. thats a new one for me but I will give it a try, the manual had shown me the three rubber mounts that I have to get to, and as well there are some that come up from each side, is there any other "hidden" that you know of?

Again thanks a bunch,

Chris

I've never done that particular motor, but I might add that you need to be careful when removing the rubber mounts so that you don't stress them so much they break. they're fairly expensive (20 or 40 bucks apiece, according to which ones you have to buy.) You'll have to pry the midsection top/motor base back a little to get to the bolts that hold the tiller bracket on. I'd wait until I had it totally apart before I ordered gaskets and such so you will only have to order once and not have to pay too much in shipping.

THere may be more parts broken than you expected.

Re: replacing swivel bracket

Jb,

Thanks for the direction, once I realized that I had to remove the powerhead, I went at it with the manual and the info I found on another thread,--http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Johnson_9.9_powerhead.htm -- so between the both your advise and this link I was able to tear it down last night, and if it wasnt for a problem with a rusted tilt bolt on the used replacement part ( I still dont have out) I would have had it back together last night, at least I think I would have.

Anyway after browsing this site a bit I have to say I am really impressed with all of the good natured, well intended, unpaid for help and assistance that you and others like you put out there daily, its very refreshing, hopefully it will catch on in more social situations, anyway

Thanks a Lot,

Chris
