replacing temp gauge

I have a temp guage that has no numbers...just green, yellow, and red. I'd like to have a better idea of what temp she's actually running. My question is, if I replace the gauge do I need to replace the sending unit as well?

To be certain the gauge is operating correct, use the sending unit from the gauge manufacturer.
