I am in the process of replacing the pump motor on my 96 johnson 70 hp. I have found that the only way to acces the old pump is to completey remove the whole system.. There is a pin through the rod eye and a rod in the lower end. I have removed all the snap rings and have tried to knock out the pieces using a punch and they are not moving. My manuel says to not use heat.
Any suggestions?

I may not understand your response. But the pins are seperated, and there is not a lot of space to grip the ends.

Try posting in the Johnson section and post a pic so we know what parts you mean.

I hope the diagram shows up. The parts I need to remove are #32 and #34. They hold the trim/tilt unit ontp the engin. I need to remove the whole unit because I need to replace the trim/tilm pump motor. It is a very simple fix, but, of course there is one screw that I cannot get access to unless the whole thing is aken down.trim.jpg

I just went through the same fix. The top pin came out fairly easy with a few hits with a 3 lb hammer and a steel rod, the bottom rod was more difficult but by working it back and forth it finally came loose and out. A combination of saltwater, stainless and aluminum is the problem I suspect, just keep at it.

Heating Al is a risky thing. My evinrude is the same age as yours and has always been in saltwater. Don't be afraid to use a hammer and a 5/8" steel rod. Good luck! You also need to release the pressure on the unit with the manual release valve on the port side of the outboard and lift the motor out of the way and hold it up (a sturdy rope or a come-a-long). Otherwise you might lose a hand if the motor falls.

Re: replacing trim/tilt motor pump.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I did get the pin out after a long and difficult battle. Now, I have installed the new tilt trim pump. The doum button seems to work although nothing moves, but the up does nothing. I put fluid in, but my manuel is not real clear on how to do it exactly. So, any suggestions on why I the motor runs when I press on the down button but not on the up, and why the piston does not go down, and any advice on the fluid.

thank you to all, you always save me a ton of money, and i always learn something new.
