Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

Just to keep the discussion going, I would recommend that you get a full sized water separating filter and mount it as close to your tank as possible. Then eliminate any and all filters between it and the engine except the screen in the fuel pump.

I agree. Get rid of the other if you have a fuel/water separator. I used both and had no problems, but I'm sure it was overkill to have two filters...

Can someone indicate where the original mounting location is for the regular fuel pump? Is there a vacuum source provided for this location, or is it from the same location as for the VRO?

Well, Ive ordered a kit that includes the OEM fuel pump bracket, so I will be mounting this in a given location, but I dont know where that is.

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

well, im installing the pump and oem bracket and have run into a problem. It seems that the pulse fitting on the fuel pump is 1/4" while the fitting on the motor is 5/16. Is there a pulse fitting with a 1/4" nipple??

The pump is a 438557.

or should i just just a 1/4" brass nipple per the above method?? I note the the above message indicates a 3/8" fitting, while mine appears to be 1/4"...

Then I would just go to Home Depot and pick up a 1/4" brass hose barb for the engine and install it where the pulse limiter was ...

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

Old thread- Could use some help on this one. Mine is an '89 Johnson 60 hp J60TLCE. VRO II. About to become an ex VRO II. BRP shows an '88 60 hp non VRO fuel pump to be part #433888. The Sierra part reference is 18-7352. But Sierra lists it as up to a 55 horse motor. Is this gonna make any difference? The price difference between OEM and Sierra is huge. My local dealer has an OEM for about $85. Iboats lists it for $45. I'll source out the rest of the stuff for the change-over. This is the only question I've got. Is the Sierra Part # 18-7352 a good pump for my motor? My motor and I thank you. KR

Why don't you use what Rickdb1boat used? His engine is larger than yours and
438559
worked fine for everone else that has done the conversion.

I just did a conversion on a1985 70hp jonny. I used the existing pulse eliminator(as the pulse elimiter has a baffle that does not shut off the vacuum) and bought the hoses new at auto parts store. I used pump part #438557 and it worked well.

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

There is considerable foolishness in the way these pumps are listed.

In the 1973-1976 motors 135HP, a single lift pump was used to supply the fuel for the 135HP engines; the part number was 385784. 385784 has now superseded to part # 438559. That's the pump used by Rickdb1boat.

In 1977 the 140HP used one lift pump, part #388268. That pump now supersedes to 438556. That's the pump that smkonwatr used.

The difference is that the 438559 has three hose nipples, and 438556 has only two. So it is dependent on the engine mounting and where the pulse comes from as to which one will work for you.

Sierra 18-7352 lists as the aftermarket replacement pump for the OEM 438556, which as stated is the listed pump for a 1977 140HP engine.

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

:) Thanks Ezeke. Sierra 18-7352 it is. I appreciate the finality of your findings. That's the same part # I came up with after much time spent searching it out. But didn't completely trust my findings. I'm still a little green at the outboard game. Considerable foolishness pretty well sums it up. So many different cross references. This has been an excellent thread. I saved it from last year because I knew I was going to set up for pre-mix. BTW, the whole kit (complete) available from one source listed somewhere in this thread was very pricey. IMHO. Right at $150. DIY is certainly the most frugal way to do this conversion. Many thanks. Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

Hate to resurrect an old thread, but I have an 85 Rude 90hp. I'm wanting to replace the VRO with a non-VRO fuel pump. Can someone tell me what pump I'll need for this motor?

Which standard pump would you recommend? One of the pumps ( Sierra 18-7352) listed above is for a smaller motor. Would using this pump be fine for a 90hp motor?

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

actually as long as the fuel side of the vro pump is working, unplug the tank, unplug the sender of the vro pump. cut the oil line and plug it. then when the vro fuel side fails you can go to the straight fuel pump. use what you have till you have to spend the $$$. mix you gas, disconnect the fuel line, pump primer bulb till you get gas with the oil mix. you can tell by the color. reconnect and go boating. the fuel side of the vro pump, could last another 20 years.

Re: Replacing VRO pump with NON VRO fuel Pump

I know nothing about VRO systems so if I ask a stupid question, I apologize :p

But I don't have the separate oil tank. should I just reconnect everything the way it was, premix the fuel and hit the water?
