I need info on gear possition while dropping lower to change impeller

I don't have a manual for your motor, but the Seloc manual that covers it says "...forward or reverse gear to free the shift rod from the shift linkage". I generally use forward to get the shift rod as high as possible for reassembly.

Alan, On my '98 Johnny 150HP V6, the manual specifies forward.
