1996 evinrude ocean pro 200 hp.I will be replacing the waterpump and impeller.I was told that the linkage is a pain to disconnect ,When I remove all the bolts on the lower unit will the thing just come off? Somewhere I read that the linkage is up by the carbs can someone take me thru the steps.I did a search but could not find my engine in there.thanks

I don't know whether your motor has a bolt thru the shift linkage or the pin you pull out of the linkage bar, but your motor does have a 2 piece cowling pan that you can take off to gain good a good visual of the shift rod connection. Generally you only have to take off the port side of the pan.

thanks for responding, now the cowling pan thats what covers the carbs, but i do have to disconnect the linkage up by the engine under the port side of the pan? Is this correct?

Drem....your shift rod is held to the shift linkage, up at the motor, by a shift rod pin that needs to be removed to get the lower unit off.

You will need to get to it from the port side of the engine. Shift the engine into reverse (this lets you get to it easier). Look to the bottom and rear of the lower carb from the port side. You will see a triangular shaped lever with the shift rod attached to it. The pin screws in and out and I believe is a 3/8" head. A 1/4" drive socket drive set with long extension and universal joint will make removing/installation of the pin easier. I put a little piece of masking tape in the socket so the pin will stay put in the socket and not fall out.

With the wireing harness' and fuel lines there on the port side, it can be a little hard to get to and see. But move some of this stuff and you can get to it.

The cowling pan is the big white bowl that the top engine cover sits on and clamps to. There will be 2 bolts in the rear, one is by the latches and 2 bolts up front. You can take the whole pan off or just hafl by removing those bolts
