i'm about to finish putting down new floor, and i wanted to make sure my floor was totally waterproof. first i was thinking about just covering my plywood with a real good epoxy to make it waterproof and then covering it with a fiberglass sheet to make it even more waterproof. then a nice coat of paint before laying down my new carpet. anyone got any ideas/comments. let me know if you have done anything like this and what brand epoxy's you have used that have worked the best. thanks you guys

Re: replacing your floor

This forum is about boats. Boats do not have floors. They have decks and soles, but not floors. UGH!

Gonna move this to the build and restore forum. It fits better there.

Re: replacing your floor

I'm using US Composites epoxy and I've also used System Three. Both will work fine in your application. US Composites is probably the cheapest you'll find anywhere. Apply resin to the wood a couple of times, waiting about an hour in between then apply your fiberglass on the third and final coat.

If you don't already know, I would like to tell you that poly based products will not adhere to epoxy so use caution when deciding to use epoxy as your resin for this task or when choosing a paint that works well with epoxy. Not really sure if you need to paint so maybe someone who's done it will give better feedback in that regards.

Your plan sounds great. I'm doing my deck right now. Plan is to seal all edges and bottoms with epoxy resin. Then install the floor, then put a coat of resin on the top, then a layer of cloth and resin. I have no experience with this other than what I've read on here. I plan to just email U.S. Composites and tell them what I'm doing and the temperatures I plan on working in and let them tell me what I need. I've heard great things about their customer service from other members here.

Also, I'm not sure what your primary boat usage is but you may want to reconsider carpet. I had carpet in my last boat and hated it. I plan to go with either a marine vinyl or a non-skid coating of some sort this time.

I agree with your objection to the use of the word "floor" in relation to boats.
Just for the hell of it I searched "floor" in this forum. The search returned ten
pages of posts.
Changing this usage of the word "floor" may be as much of a lost cause as
some of the cockpit and cabin sole restorations in this forum. GH

Re: replacing your floor

Hello, I too am new to boats and restorations just like to tear things and up and rebuild them. If you use the word deck on google I come up with docks not decks so....I have just acquired a sterncraft model 15(thought was model 177b but was mistaken) It hasn't been titled or registered in several years has a merc 500 on the back have been able to verify not stolen from registered owners but both the boat and motor owner claimed to have sold it several years ago( motor owner passed away and kids sold it, said dad was great with engines and it ran but that was 4 years ago) I am trying to find out about polymer deck materials and truckliner for deck instead of carpet. Is just a little 15' er with stick steer also thinking of moving in controls to accomidate for light switches and tilt trim next to the throttle instead of beside and to the front of throttle...if possible. Another thing unsure of is how to install post seats into the deck? is there anything special I need to know??? Hoping when done can take my 6 year old out. My 15 year old son auto shop teacher said bring it to him and he and the students will look at the engine for me, just bring "mufflins". He may even be able to help rewire lights for me. Would love led for bow lights but all I have seen are single units and this boat has two single units on port and starbord side of trolling motor. So...If anyone can tell me or even better has photo of sterncraft model 15 year 1972, experience with polymer deck material or truck bedliner material, or stick steer modifications (saw a warcraft with sticksteer with the wedge to captains seat) or how to install post seats in a new deck it would be great. Just planning for now but gotta start with plan to see what will cost. Then see about suppliers, techniques including the gauges and gps-maybe. Oh yeah is fiberglass hull.
Thanks
