If I were to repower from a 4.3L merc w/ alpha 1 to a 5.0 or 5.7 what am I looking at for approximate costs? Thanks!

It depends of course, on how you obtain your engine & drive and whether you do it yourself or pay someone else. The difference can be several thousand $$
If you go from a 4.3 engine to a 5.7, you *should* also either replace the drive or change the gearing. depending on how you do that will determine the costs.
If you get a junkyard (truck) 5.7L engine, and use the 4.3L drive, and change the prop to a MUCH higher pitch to compensate.......It'll "work" and you do it all yourself, will cost you the engine, prop, and engine mount fab work and any other parts you need like manifolds, risers, etc. (I think the flywheel housing/coupler might be the same depending on the year model of your 4.3 and teh 5.7 you use)........someone will jump in here on this.
The best way to do it would be to find a rotten boat with the engine/drive you want and swap it ALL over.
