Reputation & reliability of 90hp Yamaha?

I've seen a few late model Yamaha 90hp 2 and 4 cycle motors for sale. I was wondering how well they hold up, and if they have a good reputation. I especially like the 4 cycle 90hp, but it weighs a wopping 100 lbs more than the 3 cylinder 2 cycle 90.

Any comments or opinions?

The 2 stroke Yamaha 90 is a great engine. It is light for a 2 stroke 90, but it is also small displacement for a 90, so it won't have the low end torque of the bigger-inch 90s.

The F90 is a lower state of tune in the same hardware as the F115, so it is heavy. A good engine, but I would go for the F115 at the same weight.

Is the 90 hp for the MFG? If it is, I would not put a 90 hp 4 stroke on your transom. As you know, the transom is the weak spot of those old MFGs. The 2 stroke 90 hp is heavy enough for that transom. It is a strong reliable engine that can last a long time if the routine maintenance is performed and if good Yamalube is used.

It would be to replace the 85hp on the Bayliner. Trying to figure out what a good replacement would be if I chose to upgrade the old Force.

I have a Yamaha 2006 90 HP 4 stroke with about 130 hours. So far its been a really excellent engine. The only problem that I've had with the unit is when salt water got into the fuel tank. That was my fault and I can't blame Yamaha for that. I repowered from an old Merc 2 stoke (which by the way also served me very well). The new 4 stroke was so smooth and quite I installed a radio. Again, it's really been a great engine, but they don't give those things away...
