Bigger avatars are just making the text block narrower within the individual post. It's the big pictures posted within the text that are enlarging the text block throughout a thread and making side scrolling necessary.

In this case you may be accurate, but it seems not always to be the case. I think the important thing is to confine the posts to acceptable standards whenever possible. Then again, who sets the acceptable standards?
