I am looking at a boat with an 85 HP Force outboard. The model is 856LB9.

Questions: Can someone tell me what year it is?

I am concerned that with the motor no longer in production, are parts readily available?

It is on a 17 foot fiberglass boat. Should it have enough power to pull a single ski water skiier?

Can anyone tell me what the quality of these engines are. Do they run well with minimum maintenance or are they fussy with some troubling habits.

Would like some answers before I commit to another boat.

Thanks

Kendallmann

kENDALL, IT IS A 1989 MODEL...mercury stopped building force motors in 1999. almost all parts needed to maintain/repair are still available from merc. This is an old design engine and do need maintenance....if given it will serve you well.....as far as single ski......depends on how wide his butt is!

Yes, what ODD1 said. these are a high maintainance engine, but part are available under Merc's "Quicksilver" label.
Good oil is vital. They destroy themselves quickly on inferior oils. Use Quicksilver,
Valvoline,QuakerState ect, TC-W3 oil only,
and greater than 90 octane gas.
Check lower unit for milk every other trip.
I've found a pipe cleaner in the vent screw hole to be a fast and cheap way to keep an eye on it.Just use a new screw gasket each time.

------------------
I'm no expert, but I DID sleep at a Holiday Inn last night!
