I am building a new boat up from glassfibrehull. I have to make some reinforcements of wood several places.

I laminate the wood to get better strength and lower weight. Have anyone ever tried gluing the wood together with resin ? Its strong and cheap and totally waterproof. Will it work ?

Yes...BUT it MUST be vacume bagged.......if ya don't know what this is or how to do it cheaply, you might jus wana use glue or epoxy.......

G DANE,
You can use polyester resin to glue wood with, but it must be filled with talc at a ratio of 1:1 by weight. The talc is just plain talcum powder without the perfume. It makes a real tough filler as well as glue.LOT stronger than the wood you're bonding.

g'luck & c/6

Hooty

polyester resin is NOT a glue & truly does not bond to wood .. an it is waterproof.. it lets rot thru like a sive..

Re: Resin as glue

There is a much better solution....there is a manufacturer that makes composit beams and ribs in a selection of sizes and you use an epoxy to bond everything to the hull. This method would probably save you 200-300 lbs on a boat your size or more and the system is much stronger. go to: web page
and send John an email asking for the name of the company that supplied the composit componenets.
oops boy he got back fast, hold that email:

Got an email from John rite away;

Mark,

That was Compsys, Inc. Call 321-951-9464. Ask for
Kieth. Tell him Ship Shape TV sent you.

Thanks,

John

Realy..Starboard or better-yet, DIAB core material would make great, lightweight stringers, and you can glass them in with no worries about rot or bonding issues. Just an opinion.
Ship Shape TV rulez! Tell John G, Kieth and the gang they have many fans here, and tell him to quit drillin holes in that gorgeous Bertram Moppy!! :D

Re: Resin as glue

Crab Bait you were right.

I did a little test last night and glued 3 pieces together to a poole. I could split them with my hands this morning. It seemed as the resin didnt harden out, when between the layers.

I got a bit worried, i already build some reinforcements in buttom of hull, made by mahogony plywood, covered with glassfiber/resin. But it seemed to mee as the resin with mat sticked very well to the plywood. Does it match better ??

Re: Resin as glue

I found using epoxy resin with a layer of 3/4oz or 1 1/2oz glass between the layers of wood made an incredibly strong bond. The pieces need to be held very tight together, I tried several options, weights etc. Finally screwed the pieces together and later removed the screws and filled the holes.

This worked great for me.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

emp.

Flyboymark and Ed

I just took a clouser look at the testpiece. The wood totally absorbed the resin - thats why it didnt bond. I guess the advice about mixing with talcum, or one layer of mat, is good then !

12footer and FlyBoyMark :

I live in Denmark, its too complicated buying the composite stuff, although it sounds great using something else than wood with thoughts on the possibility of rot ! Thanks for advice.

Re: Resin as glue

all i can say is poly resin is not a glue.. period .. like ink is not paint.. sure its real sticky when curing , but still doesn't make it a glue.. plus it lets rot pass rite thru .. cuttin' corners to save a buck ,,, well you know the story....to ED,,, your rite about a tite clampin' ... your lucky it bonded at all.. thin epoxy should never be used as a bondin' agent without thickenin' it up .. an then a very lite clampin' should be used as to not squish it all out the sides.

Re: Resin as glue

When I built fiber glass boats many years ago we used 4 pieces of 1/2" plywood for our transoms. We used polyester resin and mat in between each piece and clamped the whole thing together in the mold. You would get an even better bond with an epoxy resin but that won't work if you have to use more polyester resin in your boat project.

Re: Resin as glue

an back then they thought poly resin was the poop .. the answer.. they thought it was waterproof an wouldn't let wood rot.. this is what the boating industry did/give us... a failed science...

Re: Resin as glue

But crab bait, they still use poly or most do. If it's done right it should last forever even over wood. When you start making limber holes and things like that in the stringers/bulkheads and not sealing them properly that's where/when the problems start.

crab bait,
Mix polyester resin 1:1 with talc.
Glue two pieces of wood together with it.
Allow it to gel & cure.
Tell us it won't bond with wood.

c/6

Hooty

Vacume bagging works with resin too. Squeezes it so tight it sticks and squishes out all the extra to sand off.............14 PSI on every square inch of what you're working on...

Re: Resin as glue

sure it'll bond for a whie... but how about year after year... you caN SEAL limber holes all you want with that junk 92 coats worth an it'll still let rot causing water moleculs pass rite thru .. bottom line ;; wood & poly resin don't go well together.. it's a failed science.....

Re: Resin as glue

I should have mentioned I was using (thanks crabbait) thick epoxy (puchased from boat builder supplier), additionally all of the surfaces I was bonding were being encased in glass.

Further, I left tabs overlapping (out) from the sandwich, I used these tabs to bond to the exterior shell, kind of like making a sandwich, letting the meat flop over the bread, folding it over the edge and then encasing the whole "shabang" (<-is that a word?) with a pita pocket.

Cheers.

emp.

Re: Resin as glue

Does this mean I can expect my fiberglass/polyester boat to melt??
