Re: Resin as glue

Here's one for ya Bait:

I found a boat builder through a 'friend of a friend' etc...

He claims putting epoxy in an already poly-resin boat don't mix well. Claims he's been doin it for years. What do you think?

Also, (not to change subject) I found a black-gunkish mess in the bottom of my stringer holes. It might be remnant moisture or maybe old dried up oil. I don't know.
Should I remove all of this and just start plain fresh to the hull or leave a bit of the original stringer glass? They make nice guides to put your new wood in.
This guy says he takes his repairs back down to the bare flooring and start fresh. I am wondering if my resin will stick to this messy surface. I've tried to get all of it out, but it's difficult.

I think he's full of **** (insert appropriate word).
I'm going with epoxy. It might be a few more bucks, but well worth it. Got my wood in, now I'm waiting for the glass and resin to get here so the fun can begin.

H.

You can put epoxy over resin but NOT resin over epoxy..it usually won't cure.

Re: Resin as glue

I am building a composite boat at this time, an 18 foot center console bay boat, out of plywood and fiberglass. If you use epoxy resin, thickened with woodflour (FINE sawdust, like from a belt sander), to glue your wood together, you will tear up the wood before you break the epoxy. I have used System 3 epoxy and West System, either choice will work well, but West System will be easier to find. They sell it at Boater's World and West Marine. From what I have heard, epoxy will work over polyester resin. I would suggest you go to www.bateau.com and ask questions on the message board there. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks there.

cvlngineer

i'd get that black nasty gunk outta there.. how can ya trust a good bond.. it's rite,, poxy on poly , N O T poly on poxy...sounds like your serious hommer.. your committed now.. it'll be fun ,, it'll be not fun ,, but it'll be fun.. i like your doug fir.. it's great boat wood.. an it's true .. they don't grow OLD trees anymore.. anyway , remember ,, glass doesn't make it waterproof.. the poxy makes it waterproof.. the glass gives it SOME but not ALOT of strenght & keeps from wood checking..but if you have puckers, air pockets, & not down at right angles ,, than the glass becomes a hinderence..

Thanks Bait...

This boat has so much floor surface, you'd have to be blind not to get the right angles!

I am however, thinking about stuffing some cross bracing between the stringers. Originally it didn't have this. I think it might toughen it up a bit.

Comiitted? you bet! I'm in too deep now.

The wood's here, the glass is on its way.
Now I have to buck up and buy the resin. (there goes my savings)

Guess I better find a flexible-disc sander. looks like I'm going to take the old stringer glass all the way to the bottom of the boat. Just as well I suppose. At least I'll know it's fresh and back to square one.

My Unlce said it best: A boat is like a hole in the water that you keep tossing money into!

LOL! You can't say it any better!

H.
