Found on data plate of Force 50HP with black/charcoal paint, no "by Mercury" on hood. I checked the forum, and two conflicting references are listed, 1986 and 1988.

I would expect there to be two digits at positions 5 and 6, which would be the last two digits of the year. In this model number, it is "8C". The online parts lists all have two digits at positions 5 and 6, and I can't be sure about "8C".

Thanks.

It's an 88. 50 is the horsepower rating. F8 is 1988 and C is the model to help you find easily swappable parts with the ones that came with the engine.

Thank you for the replies.

Uhg. I have always looked up parts in the "Mercury Marine Parts" category, "Search by Year/Model Number" section, "Force Outboard Parts" sub-section. That query path represents the date with two digits in the model number, as in "507F88C". ( http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/Force/1988/parts.html )

A simple change to the "Search by HP/Serial Range" section would have given me the "507F8C" found on my motor's data plate. "507F8C" and "507F88C" are the same model, by the Boats.net parts search.

Thanks!
