I just purchased a 75 glastron V156 to restore. Boat needs new floors, stringers and transom. It also came with a 40hp Evinrude Big Twin of an unknown year. I checked the model number reference guide on evinrudes site but no go. Best bet is it is late 60s early 70s. Without the year I don't know what manuals to purchase I know I will need the parts book and repair manual. If anyone can help. It looks like the model is a 40535M.

I could not find a 40535 either.
There is a 40555, which would be a 1975 and would match your boat year.
Post some pics of the motor, inside and out and somebody may be able to tell the year.

Ok. I cleaned off the plate. It looks like a 40553M is the official model. I goggled it to be a 1965. Any recommends on which seloc manual to get? I hear ibots is. Great parts source but I will need a parts catalog and repair Manual. I have no engine experience and will need to get her up and running on a non-existent budget. My repair funds will b going into rebuilding the structure.

Re: Restoration project: non-working evinrude big twin 40 hp

Today I replaced the dry rotted fuel lines. I also ordered a carb gasket kit and ignition contacts kit. Hopefully they are the right part kits. The seller implied they worked on my year/hp but I could not verify because individual part numbers were not provided. I guess I will just cross my fingers and hope I'm not out the cash.

I checked the parts catalog and the two wire harness assemblies are no longer available at a Couple of vintage outboard web sites. Any suggestions on sourcing these? I dont know if anything is wrong specifically but I assume 45+ year old wires should be replaced.

I'm still not sure of the problem. I haven't received the water muffs yet but I was told it sparks but will not stay running. I should have the original owners manual/troubleshooting guide in a few more days. The anticipation of waiting on parts is somewhat irritating.

Finding a wiring harness may be difficult. You might check at NYMarine.ca - he makes some of them, but they are expensive. You may be able to find a used on on Ebay or at AOMCI.org, but again, it will be 45+ years old also. I usually end up making my own harness. Not that hard to do with a wiring diagram.
Don't run that motor on muffs. Put it in a tank of water with water level up well above the lower unit.

iboats sells all of the common maintenance stuff for your motor. That way you don't have to worry about buying the wrong part. :)
The wire harnesses are not available, so you'll have to make your own. The motor may not need it.

I don't know what you are planning on doing with the muffs. Unless you managed to source a long obsolete water adapter for your motor, then you need a barrel or big trash can to run the motor in.

I need to get the motor off the boat. I will build a rolling motor stand and make a platform bottom to use a water barrel. I didn't order the rectangle shaped muffs based on the above replies.

I will try the carb and ignition kit I ordered and post from there. Perhaps the wiring harnesses are overkill and indeed not needed. I was merely concerned with the age of the wire insulation. They do not look physically bad.
