just that custom top is worth a few hundred bucks and looks to be in excellent shape....you definitely got a deal, but every deal comes with the hidden price and that price will be blood, sweat, and tears (all from the fiberglass). You will come to know the power of the itch!

Re: How bad is this guys?

I got their number I will call them tomorrow!. I have a mask which was around $50 from HD with to filters in front (is this going to work)...I also have all the tools so I will not need anything to buy (except from sand paper and grinders). What is the best plywood to use and we only have westmarine here in Grand Rapids Michigan is there another place where I could get cheaper materials like fiberglass and resin and foam. I would be willing to spend the time around $1000 to have this thing running but now I am hoping there is nothing shady with the boat and hoping the engine works...I started it and seemed fine when he brought it over, I have not test driven it though most of lakes and rivers here are frozen

Re: How bad is this guys?

Welcome eavdic10, oops is right about the value of the boat. My marine guy commented on the work I'm about the amount of time and money I'm putting into a 40+ year old boat. My reply was the amount of money I'm putting into my boat will still be cheaper than a years worth of payments. I would still have to worry about how a new boat is constructed and flaws in the boat. When I get done with mine I will know how it is contructed and I will also (hoping) that I will only have to do it once cause it will be better than what the factory did. Besides nothing like gaining new skills in life. Make sure you read oops hull extension. He will tell you what pages to read, I recomend reading the whole thing. Very educational. Frisco has some awesome videos.

Keep your chin up... There are about 25,000 open threads on the dry dock (what we call this forum) and about 24,975 started just like yours. I'm glad I'm in that number because I am learning a ton and have met a bunch of really great people that I would have never met had I not bought a rotten boat with a bum engine... Welcome to the club... The waters warm...jump in.

I have been there bud, and I know what you are feeling. Betrayed, angry, and many other emotions. However, I am proof that a hardcore restoration can be done. I have about 2500 to 3000 in my supplies for my restoration. Now my boat is almost 22.5 long, and used a lot more stuff than yours will.

Take a look at my thread and you will find lots of pictures and how too videos there.

Your other option is to sell the motor for $1000 and the trailer for $400 or so and you aren't out much.

No offense to the OP, but I don't understand the rationale of: "I only paid $X for the boat so I don't want to put $Y into it." The two figures have nothing to do with each other. All that matters is that you end up with a good safe boat in the end for a cost you can live with. If you intend to use the boat for a few years, if you end up with more $$$ in it than the current market price that's irrelevant.

Re: How bad is this guys?

I bought safety equipment on Amazon.com for very reasonable prices. I put 100 dollars on a gift card and have purchased:

3M 7501 7500 Series Professional Half Facepiece Respirator (Small)
3M R6001 Organic Vapor Cartridge, 1-Pair
3M R-2091 Particulate Filter P100 (6)
Dewalt DPG82-11C Concealer Clear Anti-Fog Dual Mold Safety Goggles
DuPont TY127S Disposable Elastic Wrist, Ankle & Hood White Tyvek Coverall Suit 1428

And I still have money left over...

Now on the demolition of the boat the tools that I have used the most are:
Cordless drill
Sawzall
Large pry bar
4.5" grinder
Dremell

I haven't got into any full time grinding yet and may have to buy a new grinder and I don't know about how many grinding disks I will be using.

Just wanted to give you an idea on how much I have spent so far...if you already have the tools like a drill, sawzall, grinder, pry bars & etc. you are that much closer to getting this project started if you want.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do!!

Re: How bad is this guys?

Frisoboater, I checked your threads and restoration out last night for about 2 hours :) what a dedication man. Got me motivated too, I am sure I will have questions for you especially in regards to putting stringers in in the bow part because the top ones are rotten but bottom ones are good.

@ Glenn, thanks I have most of those tools I also have a respirator I don't have the suit I might have to get one. I have a grinder as well I just wonder what kind of disk or brush do you use on the grinder to make things clean and even on the inside..?

Re: How bad is this guys?

I have drilled into them and the wood comes out yellow-Gold :)...I am hoping that I only have to replace the front because when I drilled into those comes out rotten. It seems that if I might be able to just replace the front stringer and leave the 4 main ones in. This might be a stupid question but "below the ski department or hole that part of boat seems fine. Is there foam below there too? should I test that as well ? Btw the foam on the sides under the seats is dry it seems that someone replaced it before because someone patched up the stringers in the front but did not do a good job.

Re: How bad is this guys?

Okay have you core sample the foam all the way to the hull? If you have foam surrounding the stringers how did you core sample them in the back of the boat?

In this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=526658&page=8&p=3614841#post3614841 Post # 183 is a picture of a couple of grinding disks that will do you well. I am not sure about the grit but I have a 36grit grinding disk on my grinder.

You should use the resin discs @ 24 or 36 grit. They work best. The flappers wear out much to fast. Harbor Freight sells the discs and the grinder for under $40 bucks. Put a 3m Scotch Brite pad over the vent holes on the Grinder with rubber bands and it will last a lot longer
