I'm trying to resurrect a TJ60TLENE that has been sitting for a few years. I did a compression test and #1 & #3 read 110 but #2 reads 95. I assume that means the block needs to be bored out and she will need new pistons, etc. It has spark to all 3 cylinders but not sure how strong. I used a spark tester that has a clear tube that shows the spark.

Also, the PO cut the wires on the VRO. I haven't found a replacement for just that part of the VRO so is this one trashed? I was going to get a rebuild kit but if I have to buy a new VRO, I might just put in a regular pump and pre-mix. What fuel pump would replace the VRO?

I plan on replacing all the fuel lines and fuel filter and rebuild the carbs.

I was going to get the 60hp going to replace a 40hp that is currently being used. The 40 has had a few problems and needs the lower unit rebuilt and has a crack in the housing near the prop. It's losing oil. Not sure if it's the crack or bad seals. I also think it needs new gears as it has no power in reverse.

Use the Vro as a premix pump. Plug the oil line to the pump and remove the oil tank and harness. If the pump is junk use the pump off of a commercial 65 hp or the 84 and earlier 3 cylinder.

Those compression numbers warrant the purchase of a head gasket. Take the head off and have a look see. You may find no damage and just stuck rings. If so, just stuck rings, take care of that then Buy the OEM water pump kit as it contains a thermostat upgrade in it. At least I am pretty sure that your model falls in that range and I think the tstat upgrade comes with it.

I could have everything mixed up here as I am down to just 2 of those left that I still take care of...also had a couple beers this evening. .it is Friday after all

I think jakedaawg is talking about the cooling mod that is done to those motors. Look at where the pee Line comes off of the block. If it is on the top of the block By the red plug it has been done. If it is low on the exhaust plate it needs to be done. Then you need the OEM kit like Jakedaawg said.

So do I run seafoam for stuck rings or do I need to take the pistons out and replace the rings?

Tilt the motor up and dump seafoam right in the plug holes. A better product is BRP engine tuner. A little seafoam goes a long way. Then let it sit overnite.

The line on mine is low on the exhaust plate. I am ordering the factory rebuild kit and it comes with new thermostat springs. Is that the mod?

The parts for relocating the tell tale are in that kit.-----More than one step involved in the cooling mod.

Ok. I found Service Bulletin 2276 which explains the mod. I haven't taken the head off yet but I've got a new head gasket, water pump, and carb repair kits in the mail. I guess I should have ordered a new thermostat while I was at it.

Hopefully the cylinder walls aren't scored and I will just need a new head gasket.

Dont open any of the parts when you get them. Its a real kick in the pants when you take the head off and it is scored. Even worse to find out it is already .030 over.

Yeah, I won't open any of the parts until I've taken the head off. I'm being optimistic that the cylinder's won't be scored and it will be an "easy" fix. I ordered the parts because I didn't want the head off and the cylinders exposed to get dirty.

I got the service manual but it says to take the power head off and then take off the head. So, silly question, can i just remove the head while the power head is still on?

The head simply comes of with powerhead installed on the exhaust housing.----What manual are you reading ?

Thats what I though. The factory OMC manual has a section on powerhead and it shows the steps for removal then dissassembly.

That would be for doing a complete teardown.----Simply take the head off now.

I've got the OMC manual. There is a powerhead section. It starts with removing the powerhead from the exhaust housing, then disassembling it. I figured you could just remove the head while the powerhead is on the exhaust housing but wanted to make sure. Do you just stuff the cylinder with rags and tape while cleaning the old gaskets off to keep it clean?
