Motor is a Volvo 4.3L duoprop
V6-280-C-N
ser. A1101422
production date Dec 2019

Run about 35 Hrs in total .....

Gears been fine until last run out ..... started fine, put into reverse - stalled
Could not get lever out of the reverse position without pressing the gear interrupt button ..
Stalled like this 3 times in a row ..... then finally stayed ticking over, but horrible rumbling noise from gearbox.
Then went in first .... all running fine ..... few minutes run, then tried reverse again .... and around 10 times .... each time absolutely fine.
Rest of days no issues at all.

Any Suggestions ............ my guess is that it was not going fully into gear 'cleanly'

As you describe stalling when you put it in gear, that sounds to me that the prop could have been caught in something like a piece of rope in the water. If bound up tight, it could cause great difficulty getting it out of gear like you mentioned. Going the opposite way when putting in forward got rid of the trash and now it's fine. If all looks good ie: Drive oil level, Props not bent, and it's not making noise like shaking bolts in a can and goes smoothly into gear now, I say enjoy the season.

Fair comment ...... it did not sound like gears 'crunching' this was a rumbling sound ... almost like a bearing ...... but as it cleared after going fwd, not a bearing.

Certainly no damage to prop or skeg .... I'll continue my season ..... and keep my ears open.

I think it could be low drive oil, I would drain the oil and run a magnet through the oil to check for metal shavings, hope this helps.

Checked oil … all at correct level, so not lost any, and nice & clean.

I agree that is an option, but they will just ask me to take it there, and its 100 mile trip. Wanted to check if anything obvious.
I suspect you are right that it is not fully going into gear maybe shift mechanism adjustment? Would be worried that the cone clutches are not cleanly engaging possible grinding as they slip. You using the VP lube had read something on another forum folks using merc HP gear lube in VP drives getting slipping.
