my Volvo with a 275 outdrive wont lift up.there is a mechanism that locks when it goes down and when my friend shift it from reverse to forward it doesn't move the rod that comes down to it. is the other parts of it in the transom assembly somewhere.

The rod is what releases the lock when the tilt motor is used to raise the drive. When the drive is down there should be no contact between the top of the rod and the plate on the lift unit. Does the tilt motor run when you try to lift the drive ? Sometimes the rod has gotten slightly bent and does not have enough travel to release the lock.

There is a stainless sleeve that screws on to the top of the rod. IF you can disconnect the lower end of the rod you may be able to unscrew the sleeve off of it. If you cannot remove the rod then you will have to pull the drive off.

thanks,I think I found a rod with end cap on ebay.it appears that the rod end was sticking to far up in the bracket and it got crushed. does that have anything to do with what gear it is in. a marine shop told him that it only releases in forward gear.i don't see how that's possible.it appears that it will be locked until you tilt the drive. thanks

If the drive is partially lifted with the tilt motor and some one raises the drive by hand and drops it then the small cap on the end of the rod will sometime get over. Take a close look at the way the lock unit works. When the drive is down and on the setting pin and the drive hits something the lock will release. When in reverse you will see how the locking pawl moves over the release catch. Make sure all the springs especially the small coil springs on either side of the lock unit are not missing. Get a pair of channel lock pliers and see if every thing is free while spraying it with some good penetrating oil.

ican see how the ram comes down and releases the sleeve and rod to the catch mechanism but I just don't see what changes in reverse.it will stay locked until you start to raise it a touch with the tilt ram.

If you remove the rear cover you will see the shift linkage and a clevis that pushes a rod down and holds the rounded part of the lock system. This is what keeps the drive down in reverse. Just look at it as someone shifts the drive from forward to reverse.
