I just installed a tryed & trusted 1987 Johnson 110 on a pontoon which i took out for the first time today-
All went great untill later in the day i noticed in reverse i was getting a grinding noise when i applyed too much throttle:confused:
Is it possible i need to adjust linkage? Never had a bit of problem with it on the other boat it was on :(

Re: Reverse Problem?

it may be just a cable adjustment.....try taking the cable off and shift in reverse see if it still grinds if not adjust the cable

Re: Reverse Problem?

I am having exactly this problem. My 1986 Johnson 200 goes into reverse fine. If I give it only a little throttle it is fine. If I accelerate though (like backing off a trailer) It has a severe noise. It would not describe it as a grinding as it is a ratcheting or clicking. I too am hoping this is just a cable problem but I fear the worst. Can anyone give me some guidance on where I should look first to address this problem. The engine runs flat out fine in forward. Thank you in advance for any advice you may offer. -JD
