Hello all, new to the forums and i have a few questions.
I just bought a 1989 Ranger 363v with a 1989 Evinrude 150, before we took it out my father decided he wanted to take it to a boat shop and have it looked at just for safe measure, well come to find out the previous owner must have ran over a log or something in the water and damaged the lower unit, so we had the guy at the repair shop rebuild it. Took it out got it in the water everything was fine, then when we were getting ready to leave i had to put it into reverse, wouldnt go into gear, all i got was throttle control, put it back into forward worked fine, did that about 4 times "Forward was fine, but no reverse" then it finely went into reverse. Got it home took it back to the guy we had work on it, he said there was nothing wrong with the lower unit sounded like the control box or cables. So i decided on a quick cheap fix and got brand new cables, took it back to the lake, Same thing, It goes into reverse when ever it feels like it so im frustrated at the moment and looking for a few answers.

Re: reverse Problems

take the shift cable off at the motor , and shift it manually and see if it works, cables could be out of adjustment.

Re: reverse Problems

If it shifts after trying tashasdaddy suggestion, shift rod height is most likely off. :(

Re: reverse Problems

Thanks for the quick responses guys

tashasdaddy - it does go into gear when i do it by hand, i must have shifted it 12 times and everytime it worked, but its something about when i get it in the water like its a whole different ball game, ill back it off the trailer move around the bay a little bit, come back to the boat dock to pick up my old man and try it and it will not go into reverse, its hit or mis

Faztbullet - is adjusting the shift rod something i can do, i know u have to have a repair manual to set the height, but more then likely i will take it to another boat shop and have them look at it

Im just really frustrated right now, i dont have much into this boat and this one little thing is holding me back

Re: reverse Problems

Take it back to whoever you paid and tell 'em it aint right. Rod height is critical for life of gears and clutch dog. 2 or 3 turns off will affect adjustment a lot.If you need info on how to do it yourself, just post and will try to help ya out!!;)

Re: reverse Problems

have you tried to shift by hand in the water? if it shifts by hand, and not with the controller, it is a cable adjustment, or a bad cable.

Re: reverse Problems

Who put the lower unit back on the boat? You or the mechanic?

If you put the unit back on yourself, then you have to adjust it, if he did it then it is his responsibility to adjust the shift rod to specifications.

Long shaft 22-1/16? +/- 1/32?
Extra long shaft 27-1/16? +/- 1/32?
