Re: reverse

When you put the engine in "Forward", it's pushing against the transom. That's why it doesn't jump out of the water. When you put it in reverse it has nothing to push against. The propeller is trying to "Screw" it's way out of the water. Most ouboards have a "Reverse lock" that needs to be engaged manually in order to prevent this. Some do it automatically, and some have no lock at all. Post what kind of motor you have and someone will know where the lock is on that particular motor. As for the water pump issue, again, post your type of motor and size.

Re: reverse

Seems strange..
Just about all OB's have some sort of Reverse lock for that very reason.. stops the motor from raising up out of the water. No forward lock in case you hit a submerged object (Motor tilts back)

Re: reverse

Sounds almost like something has been re-assembled backwards  There's no way it should lock in forward as if you bottom out there will be much stress on your transom and L/U..
Did you re-connect the shift shaft correctly when you did the impeller ?

Re: reverse

jason bennett, you say it locks while in forward. What about neutral. With the motor out of gear, can you reach back and tilt the motor up by hand? Likewise, can you tilt the motor up by hand with the motor engaged in forward at idle speed? Is this a new boat/motor for you? Also, what kind of motor is this? Many motors have Manual reverse locks. They don't engage just because you put the motor in reverse. You have to manually lock it. Post what kind of motor you have and the HP of the motor.
