Riddle me this

The manual for my H2/SUT says the truck toy rating is 7,600 pounds. 200 pounds less than the SUV version. OK, I'll buy it but I read somewhere, many GM truck/suv of different model with the same engine rated much higher. What the H? I was born at night but not last night. Geeeze, give me a cigaret, a blind fold and take your best shot. Are people bowing smoke up their short?

It ain't all about HP... frame, trany, rear end, suspension, etc.

What? If 200 lbs makes a difference, you need a bigger truck. 8)

No doubt......for awhile I really liked the Ram SRT 10, HUGE hp, fasted production truck blah blah blah. It's tow ratings are garbage................

I thought the H2 was based on the 2500HD chassis. The 6.0 produces 25 more HP but the weight of a 2500HD Crew is still lighter than the H2....... and the 2500 tows alot more!

I would be willing to bet that the shorter wheelbase is the culprit of the low towing capacity as compared to a 2500hd. I would also guess that the GM guru's figure that the SUT has a bed and the SUV does not. With a bed people will carry more weight which will lower the tow rating.

Bob, exactly my point. Some Yukon/Silverado,GMC HD/ Avalanche have tow rating close to 10,000 pounds. With the same engine as the H2. I don't get it. The H2 is the flagship of GMC. Air leveling suspension, the whole 9 yard. More gadget and gizmo than an S&M Club. You would think the tow rating is higher.

Hoping to drag a 5,000 pounds (dry weight) boat to Lake Pyramid next weekend. I guess not.

The engine has X amount of pulling power.

I would guess that it has something to do with the listed curb weight of a little over 8K lbs for the H2 and only a little over 5.8K for the 2500HD.

What AK says. They subtract the curb weight difference from the GCVW, which ultimately lowers the tow rating. This is why a 4WD anything usually has a slightly lower tow rating than it's 2WD sibling, simply the extra weight of the 2nd drive axle . . .

Yep, as AK and QC stated it all boils down to Gross Combined Vehicle Weight (GCVW). All those goodies on the Toy Hummer add weight and lower towing cap. As do passengers and gear. Start with the listed GCVW and start subtracting from there and you will be surprised how fast the tow rating drops.

Yup, you guys are correct about the GCVW lowering the tow rating. I was just looking at a website relating to the H2. At over 8,000 pounds it's a bit heavy.

So anyhow I'm looking to performance upgrade this thing. A few items I have on my truck that I want to add on the H2. Mass Air Flow Sensor (Granatelli) three thirty nine dollars, Power Programmer III (Hypertech) three forty nine dollars, Air Intake (Airaid) one forty nine dollars, Exhaust (Gibson) two seventy nine dollars, and maybe headers but I don't think it will add any real HP.

The 4 items will yield an additional 50 horses or so which bump total HP closer to 400. Any idea where I can get a package deal or better substitution will be great. Point the way if you would.

the tow rating doesn't really have tell you how much weight you can drag, just how much you can drag safely.

E.g., about 25 years ago when I was still driving semis, I stopped at a small town truck stop for lunch. I shut off the engine in accordance with company policy. Unfortunately, 903 Cummins had a tendency to fry starters from time to time and now was this time. I went back in to call one of our mechanics to come get me. A young guy working there asked me if he could pull start it. He had a new Chevy 4x4 and was itching to try it out. I told him I was fully loaded, grossing about 73,000, and it probably wouldn't do his truck any good, but he really wanted to try it. I told him we'd better hurry because my air was going down and I knew he couldn't pull it with the brakes set. He hooked a chain to my tow hook and the ball on his truck, tightened up and started to pull. He threw a little gravel as the rear of the 4x4 squared up and then I started rolling. Dumped the clutch and the 903 barked. Proudest day of the kid's life.

Anyway, I'm sure GM didn't put his tow rating at 73,000 lb, but he got 'er done.

GQ. Vehicle control and handling combined with breaking power and control account for far more in tow ratings than HP or toque.
