Right Tach for motor?

Hello<br />I have a 1958 Mark 78 Merc that I would like to install a tach on. I purchased a 'vintage' Airguide #690 tach which was supposed to work on a 6 cyl outboard. The back of the tach has 4 jumper positions. There is a tag on the back with these instructions:<br />2 cyl magneto connect 1&2 terminals<br />3 cyl C.D. with points & batt- connect 1&3 terminals<br />4 cyl C.D. with points & batt-connect 1&4 terminals<br />Alternator system connect 1,3,&4 terminals<br />I am assuming the alternator connect does not care how many cylinders you have since this is connected to one of the yellow stator wires? Or am I wrong and this tach is only for a 4 cylinder. Any help would be appreciated- thanks

the alternator is the right one to use in fact it is the only one that will work on that engine--bob

Thanks Bob for the quick response. Just a few questions on the hookup- this tach has a yellow and black wire. Black to ground and yellow to stator I assume. Where should I tie in to the stator wire since these motors were not originally set up for a tach-just anywhere before the rectifier? Thanks again<br />Gary

Yes - or where it (wire) bolts to rectifier.<br /><br />-W<br /><br />That's the oldest Tower of Power I've seen post here thus far.
