hi Rodbolt

Long time nuh talk mon..

my mechanic has been trying to remove the bearing carrier for a whole week to change seals on lower unit.. he has the right tools and he has been using a torch on the outer casing but cautiously..it's not happening.he trying to soak it with oil. the unit has not been pulled in years.. Can I hear some recommendation in the absence of buying a rebuilt unit..

dunno, gotta love saltwater.
in the past I have actually pulled carriers in half trying to remove them.
check with SEI engineering to see if they make a unit. by this time I dont use much caution with the heat as its no good the way it is.

Hi Rodbolt,

Thanks for introducing SEI. Went to their site and was very impressed. What has been your experience with their lower units.? Checking just in case..

Also where do I look on the motor to confirm that it is a 3.1L ?. I know its a 1994 TXRS.

We have not given up on pulling out the bearing carrier and will let you know.

Thanks for your assistance

also, if we are unable to take the bearing carrier apart, can the seals be replaced from the outside ? Will the unit leaks if done this way ?

I have seen them replaced without removing the carrier with varying degrees of success.
only had the one carrier I could not remove in the past 20 years and thats the one I pulled in half.
I use the OMC v4 and V& puller legs.
work much much better than the yamaha wimpy stuff.
best way is by the model number but the second quickest way is look at the t stat housings. housings on the head means its a 2.6L housings on the top of the block are 3.1 or 3.3. 3.3 was only an HPDI so that rules yours out.

Thanks ..you have been of great help so far.. Mine is a 3.1 L.

Kindly let me have your experience on the SEI Lower units ..just in case. I googled and there seem to be good readings on them except they dont seem to hold the paint too well..

hi Rodbolt

the Model Number of the engine is a L225TXRS. i SUPPOSE THAT IT MEANS THAT THE ENGINE IS COUNTER rotating left. My tech is just finding this out and is wondering if there is any particular way to pull out the bearing carrier.. he has been with it all week.

If Rodbolt is busy, will appreciate any other expert assistance.

Re: Rodbolt- 225 yamaha -1994 2 stroke

even though the engine model is L for left hand it doesnt mean the case is an L case.
if the case hasnt been replaced the L will be stamped dead aft just above the cavitation plate.
if an L is present you CANNOT pull the carrier assy with a jaw or arm puller.
you have to pull the carrier and propshaft assy. if this is the original L case the carrier and propshaft MUST be pulled together.
Yamaha makes a tool to attach a slide hammer to the propshaft.
if this is a later model L case the shift shaft MUST be withdrawn BEFORE attempting to remove the propshaft and carrier assy.
once the carrier assy is out you MUST use a bearing seperator and a press to press the aft gear out of the bearing then use the 4 tooth spanner wrench to remove the aft bearing retainer nut.
on reassembly you MUST press the aft gear back onto the aft bearing with a press.
if your prop is stamped L or ML you most likly have a left hand case.

if they cannot handle it UPS me the case and I can try.
I may actually have a used gearcase for that engine.
could be I may even have a RH case.

Good news mon..

The tech at the yamaha dealer here got it pulled.. He used that slide hammer stuff you spoke about.. all we had to buy were the 4 seals, impeller and the 2 -0 rings for the carrier and some oil... Rest of gears, carrier, clutch dog , etc is in good shape..thanks very much for your suggestions and your patience for guiding me thru the process.. The boat will no doubt be ready for the weekend. Last time , I visited my daugher in atlanta, i left a bottle of appleton rum for you to pick up when you went to training.. you never did..her husband drank the stuff.
