Re: rodbolt

Rodbolt,

I have a 1998 model Yamaha S250TURW OX66 Saltwter Series II (bought used with 200 hours on it) that is overheating at idle. It does pee. This engine has always started easily and run fine other than the overheating at idle.

1) Put in thermostats -- there were none.

2) Checked the poppet valve and it looked OK. Did not replace the grommet (Have one on order)

3)Installed a new impeller kit and found from my new Yamaha service manual that the impeller stabilizer (5 small parts) was missing so ordered and installed those. I learned yesterday from Yamaha that the metal top on the stabilizer needs to be totally seated on the plastic "top hat" so I will fix that when I take it apart Thursday. (I had assumed that it would seat itself when the pumphousing was bolted on) I did turn the shaft clockwise as stated in the service manual when installing the impeller.

4) Replaced the water pump housing so that it would match up with the new impeller cartridge (cup).

5) Ran water down left and right sides where the thermostats go -- both imput and output sides of the thermostat cavity. Flow rate out the bottom (with the foot off) looked the same left and right comparing output to output and input to input.

6) Checked the screens on the foot and had no obstructions

7) With the foot off, hooked up earmuffs and got water to flow up to the pump

8) Learned that earmuffs suck on a Yamaha 250. The pump would not draw the water up. I used visegrips on the earmuffs to make more water flow into the water intakes. Clearly this engine likes to be IN the water.

9) When I de-winterized the engine a few weeks ago, I removed the spark plugs and cranked the engine some. Also changed the fuel water-separator filter that was almost full of water.

Sorry this is so long but I am trying to be thorough.

Thanks for your help

MikeyMc
