One for Racer here. I have just replaced the impeller on a 77 6hp Johnson and I'm wondering what the roll pin is for at the upper end of the drive shaft. It says on the diagram it's for 5 inches longer models which would be for a long shaft, which this one isn't. Any of your wisdom appreciated.

roll pin holds the brass cup in place which retains the spring which retains the carbon seal etc.....1747156541649.png

The roll pin drives / turns the mechanical seal.----And it is used for both long and short shaft.-----I say remove the power head and replace #1 and #3-----Inspect #4-----Refinish #2.

Thank you both.I had an idea that's what it was.One other question ,how comeif it holds that assembly up wheywry did it not come down when I withdrew the shaft, does it have a tendency to stick up there?

The pin comes through a slot in the housing.-----Those parts stay up there.----On a 50 year old motor it makes perfect sense ( to me ) to remove the power head to inspect those parts.

the procedure to drop the GC on older CD will show you the area of concern. not a big deal to lift the PH but if you damage the base gasket a new one ...and the correct one will be needed ( patterns differ!!)
