Rough running 75 hp Force

My dad just purchased his first pontoon boat 1996 21' Tracker. It has a 1996 75hp Force on it. The motor runs fine till you hit 2000 rpm. After 2000, it will kind of stutter for 10 seconds or so then be fine for a minute or two then start the stuttering again. Does anyone have any ideas what he can check? Also, it seems to me like the boat should go a little faster than it does. We aren't sure how fast it's going, but it isn't too fast. Any ideas of how fast it should go? Well, a 21' pontoon is not going to go very fast with a 75hp. it just will not do it..

As for the sputtering, I would first check fuel flow. Be sure there is not a restriction in the jets or that the needle in the carbs is not sticking... Might need a carb rebuild...

do you have any history on the motor as far as service to it? Like when did the last tune up occur,water pump impeller,fuel filter if so equipped,it really could be any number of things ,but more info if you have it would help.MOPARMAN ROLL TIDE 9-0

Thank you for the replies. It turns out his prop was bad. It fit a little loose and I guess would cause a bad vibration at a certain speed.
