Rough running engine!

I have a 170 HP and it was running perfect. While pulling my son on a tube, the boat started running very rough and does not have full power at max throttle. The engine would cut off at idle. We got it restarted and made it to the landing.

Today, we ran a gas line to 5 gal can of new clean gas to make sure the gas was good. I put in a new inline fuel filter on the line to the gas can. The filter was not full of gas during the test today. It did run somewhat better, however it not even close to how good it ran before the situation first happened.

This boat sank about 2 months ago and had a lot of water in the engine. We got all of the water out, changed the oil many times and had a clean fuel system after the sinking. We have been on the water 6 times or so with no issues since we got it up and going after the sinking. Any ideas>

Re: Rough running engine!

Since you ran it off of clean, fresh gas and it still had problems I'm going to say that 1- something may have gotten into the carbs. 2-that something may have come from your fuel tank, how good did you clean your fuel sys after the sinking? 3- it may be electrical related, look for any corrosion on anything electrical. It could be a host of other things since the boat was sunk so first check fuel, air, and spark. Normally I'd just say rebuild the carbs, but with the sinking, it add's allot of what if's.

If you suspect fuel restriction it seems you could pull carb inlet(s?) to check the screens. But U said it's been sunk & at this moment it runs rough all the time right? That makes me think ignition or electrical.
I'd check the plugs, wires, distributor etc. If that looks right clean up all electrical connections in the engine compartment with some fine emery cloth Don't remove any more material than you have too. Just remove the corrosion. If the terminals on the components look dirty you can take a soft wire brush to them, maybe a bronze brush.
Don't forget to disconnect the battery before removing any connections! And recheck your work twice before reconnecting things and turning the key. An ounce of prevention saves a pound of cure.

Thanks for you suggestions. I think it must be in the electrical side. We are going to try some of that tomorrow and see what we come up with.
