well the motor is all apart and the crank is on the work bench. I have a 1993 mariner mag 3 2.5 liter 150 hp motorthis is the second time the plastic ring for the vro has gone bad the first time all i did was replace the plastic gear the first time this time i am going to replace all the parts that deal with the vro. the plastic ring the metal shaft gear, and the plastic piece that connects to the vro pump the piece with the magnet in it.

Question #1
what is the main cause of this plastic gear going bad?

Question #2
how do i get the oil lite bearing out of the block?

Thanks much for your help

(A)These usually fail after a overheat problem could be a month to year. Since you have replaced the gear and it has failed again look toward the bushing being bad, pump drive gear edges worn (sharp) or oil pump locking up

Question #2

(A) You have to heat the block and use a small slide hammer to remove. These are not sold by Mercury to my knowledge and you will have to try and match it or have one made. I have a harden adapter that fit slide hammer that look like a letter L that hooks bushing and yanks it out. I then have machine shop drill center out bigger and install proper size sleeve in bushing. They leave a step in bottom so sleeve has something to rest on.

Re: round two

Thanks for your reply. i have not taken the oil pump apart but it seems fine what should i look for to see if the oil pump is bad. it is easy to turn with my fingers when it has no load. i understand that when it is pumping the oil it has an increased load on it. is there a rebuild kit for the pump? I have the bottom end of the block apart and the crank is out, I dont want to take the pistons out if i dont have to will an eazyout hook to a slide hammer work for removing the oil lite bushing.

Thanks for all the help
