RPM Gauge acting funny?

I had made a previous post about how my RPM gauge read almost 2000 while at idle and the it eventually returned to normal. The one answer I got was that the gauge is dependent on voltage to drive the needle to right spot, otherwise the gauge could jump to a higher indication. This was considered normal behavior.

Yesterday my RPM gauge read almost 3100 when I was just cruising around 20-25 kts. Normally RPMs are around 2700 for that speed. Eventually it returned to a normal reading.

Given the answer from my first RPM gauge post, is this something normal or is this becoming an indication of something going bad like the RPM gauge or the Ignition module which is where I believe the tach gets its signal or a bad connection?

From another post I made concerning running WOT, I went WOT again and adjusted my trim and once again I easily hit what I believe is top speed (~40mph) based on the internet and the boat survey report when I bought the boat. And again the RPM only indicated about 3800. The boat survey reported 4400 RPMs for WOT.

Maybe I'm trying to connect dots that can't be connected or I'm worrying about nothing.

How do you go about determining if the gauge is going bad, hence the funny readings and when at 40mph but RPMs at ~3800? What kind of voltage is fed to the gauge? For example, 12v = 6000 RPMs, 0v = 0 RPMs.

Faria gauge? Try tapping on it. It usually will correct it. If you want it fixed Faria will fix for $125 last I checked. Mine does similar.

take the dip switches and move each one back and forth a bunch of times. that usually knocks some of the corrosion off them.

FYI - Faria is making a new gauge and pocketing $120 for the service (gauge costs less than $5 to manufacture)

I have to check...in general, they are Chap gauges unless they are rebranded Faria

Chap, like every boat manufacturer buys gauges from a very few sources.

95% of them are private labeled.

Faria and VeeThree (formerly Teleflex) are the top two.

Mine does the same thing. Have to slap it a bit to make it work accurately. Loose connection somewhere.

Ayuh,.... Boat dash tachs are notorious at bein' off abit,....

You should cross check it against a known good shop tach,.....
I use my digital timin' light, especially when checkin' rpms at Wot,.....

3800 rpms could be/ is luggin' the motor, if it's right,.....
It should be 4800 rpms or so,.....
