RPM Gauge issues or normal?

is the rpm suppose to be steady(constant rpm) like a car? the rpms flucuate just a tad prolly within 200 rpms @ idle. but i do know the tach has been acting up recently(it will peg out until i hit it it goes back down)

The RPM sensor is actually a function of the alternator. The AC voltage generated is actually the same signal used for the RPM indicator. so the problem could also be from the alternator or maybe from the rectifier or could just be loose wire in-between.

if the engine revs were varying like the tacho says you would hear the engine "hunting" sounds like a bad connection if you can hit it and put it right ....
