I wanted to know what type of rpm meter to use on my 2000 175 Johnson ob . The manual tells you not to use the boats rpm meter but not the type or place to hook it to . Can you use a automotive type and connect it to the coils ?

Re: Rpm test

no you need a 2 stroke tach. if you are just testing a "tiny tach" will work. google tiny tach.

Not sure exactly what you are trying to test. But I think the "manual" feels the boat tach is not accurate enough. To get a really accurate tach, you would have to buy a high quality commercial shop tach for big bucks. They pick up the signal by an inductive clamp on a spark plug wire.
